"Tendulkar better than Bradman"

English cricket writer Simon Hughes has claimed that Indian batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar is better than the greatest batsman of all time, Sir Donald Bradman.
Hughes made the claims in his column in the Daily Telegraph.

"Tendulkar's versatility, longevity and productivity are so far ahead of his closest rival in the game. Just as Don Bradman's Test average of 99.94 was more than 50 per cent better than anyone else, so Tendulkar's tally of 99 international hundreds is similarly out of reach of his nearest competitor, Ricky Ponting, who has 69," Hughes wrote.

"When you factor in Tendulkar's prowess in all countries and all conditions – averaging around 50 in every major country apart from Pakistan – and the burden of expectation of a billion people, he must be regarded as the best ever."

"Bradman was extraordinary, but he only ever played in Australia and England. Bradman watched Tendulkar bat, famously saying that the...

Aamir Sohail : At World Cup Pakistan wasted Shoaib Akhtar

Former Pakistan cricket captain Aamir Sohail has blamed the team management for its failure to get the best out of retiring fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar during the 2011 World Cup.

Shoaib began the tournament with high hopes but was apparently so disappointed with his personal showing that he announced his retirement from international cricket Thursday. But Aamir believes that it wasn't really his fault.

"If he was selected to play in the World Cup then our team management should have devised a plan to use him but it seems like they did not have anything like that. Pakistan failed to get the best out of him," Pakistan's The News daily Friday quoted Aamir as saying in an interview.

"Remember the 2007 World Cup and the way Glenn McGrath was used as a first change bowler by the Australians and how well he performed. Look at the way Brett Lee is being used by the Aussies in this World Cup.

"It seems like we still think shoaib is 27-years-old and are demanding things from him which are no more possible," he stressed.

Sohail believes that Shoaib, who took 178 Test and 247 ODI wickets, could have achieved much more in his international career.

"When I first met him, the first thing that I noticed was that he was brimming with confidence and passion. It was obvious that he was a fighter. He was just like a wild and untamed horse. Had he been tamed to do the job properly he could have achieved much more.

"Shoaib was one of the best without any doubt because he could turn the game on its head on his own. You could give him the ball and he would make it talk and give his hundred percent all the time."

Aamir said that Shoaib's decision to retire from international cricket didn't really come as a big surprise.

"He could have waited for the World Cup to finish before announcing his retirement. But it wasn't really surprising because we all knew he would (retire) as his fitness is no longer there," Aamir maintained.

Pakistan play their last World Cup Group A match against Australia at the R. Premadasa Stadium here Saturday. Both teams have already qualified for the quarterfinals, as have Sri Lanka and New Zealand.

Shakib Al Hasan confident Bangladesh can beat South Africa, progress to World Cup quarterfinals

Shakib Al Hasan gives his Bangladesh squad as much of a chance as anyone of making the World Cup quarterfinals.

The onus is on Bangladesh to win the Group B match against South Africa on Saturday after England stayed alive in the competition with a dramatic win over the West Indies — a loss for the English would have meant elimination in the group stage and given Bangladesh a spot in the knockout round along with South Africa, West Indies and India.

Only South Africa is assured of advancing ahead of the last two Group B matches on the weekend, and is likely to be resting key players.

After back-to-back wins over Netherlands and England, Skakib says, "If we can stick to our plan, we have a very good chance to win and qualify for the second round."

Bangladesh had a stunning two-wicket win over England after crushing Netherlands by six wickets in Chittagong. Those wins combined with an earlier win over Ireland have given Bangladesh six points from five matches, two points behind group leader South Africa, one behind England and India and equal with West Indies. All bar England have a game remaining.

The confidence in the Bangladesh team has risen since a nine-wicket loss to the West Indies resulted in angry fans throwing stones at Shakib's home and the West Indies team bus.

"The boys are confident because two back-to-back wins will help build ... confidence, we will take it to tomorrow's game," he said, adding that Bangladesh really had nothing to lose and it would be the other teams under more pressure because expectations were higher on them.
The pitch at Mirpur is expected to keep low and low, suiting the Bangladeshi attack.

Coach Jamie Siddons said if Tamim Iqbal and Shakib can get the hosts innings started, he was confident Bangladesh was capable of beating anyone.
"We are still waiting for Tamim and Shakib to fire and if they do we can put a really good total on the board and put them under a lot of pressure," Siddons said.

India vs Pakistan : Ranbir Kapoor’s dream Going to be true

India vs Pakistan : Ranbir Kapoor's dream Going to be true ,Ranbir Kapoor is catching up on the action in the ongoing Cricket World Cup in the subcontinent.

In a recent interview, when asked what his dream final of this world cup would be, Ranbir said: "India versus Pakistan." Doubtlessly, it would be a match that would have billions of cricket buffs on the edge of their seats.

When asked to give a few words of advice to the Indian cricket team, Ranbir was at a loss but quickly added: "I think they know well what to do. They don't need my advice."

Picking his dream team from Bollywood, Ranbir said he would choose Amitabh Bachchan to field at the boundary because he's tall and can catch the shots headed for a six. He said he would choose Aamir Khan as the wicketkeeper because Aamir has good analysing skills. He added that he would choose Hrithik Roshan as the pace bowler since he (Hrithik) can run so fast that the batsmen would get confused.

Premadasa pitch helpful of Spinners

Pakistan will return to the venue where they've achieved their best result of the World Cup yet here on Saturday (tomorrow) for the potentially-explosive World Cup clash against defending champions Australia.

It was here at the R Premadasa Stadium that Pakistan beat co-hosts Sri Lanka — one of the pre-tournament favourites — by 11 runs on February 26 to boost their title hopes. They will now be hoping to repeat that showing against the Aussies in a bid to top Pool A and go into the knockout stage with renewed confidence.

The good news for Pakistan is that the match will be played on the same wicket on which they prevailed for Sri Lanka. Pakistan scored 277-7 and then restricted the home team to 266-9 to make it clear that they were among the serious contenders for the title.

"It is the same wicket but could behave a bit differently from what it did in the match against Sri Lanka," Intikhab Alam, the Pakistan manager, told 'The News' here on Thursday. "It is expected to offer a lot more turn than it did the last time we played on it," he added.

A turning wicket should suit Pakistan, who have one of the balanced spin attacks in this tournament. Shahid Afridi, the Pakistan captain, is the tournament's highest wicket-taker with 16 wickets while Abdur Rehman and Mohammad Hafeez have also generally bowled pretty well.

Pakistan also have the option of including aggressive off-spinner Saeed Ajmal in their playing eleven. "We will certainly consider all options," said Intikhab. "We have good spinners and a pretty decent pace attack."

Top teams will fancy facing inconsistent England

I will cross my fingers and toes but I'm not daft, the money is staying in my pocket.

We are skating on thin ice. Compared with the Ashes win the England campaign is shambolic. We have had injuries and loss of form. We are a shadow of the side we were in Australia but the main thing is World Cup are still fighting. Just.

They can still go on and win the World Cup but these intermittent, spasmodic performances have to end.
In every game England play there are some good performances and some bad ones. We are just not getting to a level of consistency. We need eight or nine people to play well at the same time. That is not happening.
What we have to keep uppermost in our minds is that, in the 1992 World Cup, Pakistan were poor and nearly out of the tournament during the group stage.

In Adelaide, England had them all out for 74 but then it rained. They got one point for a rained-off match which saw them through. They then won their semi against New Zealand and the final against England, which shows that you have to keep remember that in a knockout competition anything is possible.

This England team do have lots of heart and character. They are mentally strong. They have shown that during tough Test matches against the Australians.

They came back from a severe beating on a fast, bouncy pitch in Perth. After that game you wouldn't have given them a prayer but they won in Melbourne and Sydney. These players have bottle. That is their greatest strength and it will stand them in good stead for the rest of the World Cup.
I am glad they gave some new faces a chance against the West Indies. England needed freshening up and some energy. James Anderson has bowled as poorly as I've ever seen in this World Cup.
He was living on his reputation. He looked short of energy and, without the ball swinging, has been ordinary. Our best one-day seamer, Stuart Broad, has gone home and I'm glad James Tredwell got a chance because Mike Yardy is not good enough.

It was tough for the new guys to come in having not had any match practice. They have been here for a month and only played in the nets but they did splendidly.

Luke Wright played some really good shots under pressure. Tredwell bowled beautifully and showed an old head on his shoulders. Even when he got slogged out of the park he kept calm.
The only big disappointment was Chris Tremlett. The ball didn't come out of his hand. There was no oomph, pace and aggression. It was powder-puff stuff.

That is a big problem for England if they do go through to the quarter-finals because Ajmal Shahzad, who would have played, is unfit and will go home. If they go through and want to do well there are people who have to improve.

Matt Prior has not made a run in six matches. Ian Bell, who was in good touch in Australia, is scratching around. These two need to up their game. Eoin Morgan played a daft shot on Thursday. A leg-spinner is turning the ball square and he tries a reverse sweep against the spin and feathers one behind. Brainless.

Nor do England know their best team. They have had injuries and loss of form you couldn't legislate for. So there is lots of room for improvement in decision-making and performance by certain individuals.

They can't keep leaving it to just a handful. Luck will run out if more people don't start playing better.

I do think we are a better team bowling and fielding under pressure in low-scoring matches than we are on flat, high-scoring batting pitches.

We don't have a genuine fast bowler, or wrist spinner who will get wickets on flat pitches. We have wicket-taking bowlers when the conditions help.

England have got to hope results go their way. South Africa are going to rest some of their best players against Bangladesh – there will be no Morne Morkel or Dale Steyn.
England have to hope the South African fringe players can do what they couldn't: beat Bangladesh.

We may be entertaining everyone with great matches but other teams will fancy their chances against us. Teams have qualified comfortably in the other group and they will want to be drawn against England.

The good news for Pakistan is that the match will be played on the same wicket on which they prevailed for Sri Lanka. Pakistan scored 277-7 and then restricted the home team to 266-9 to make it clear that they were among the serious contenders for the title.

“It is the same wicket but could behave a bit differently from what it did in the match against Sri Lanka,” Intikhab Alam, the Pakistan manager, told ‘The News’ here on Thursday. “It is expected to offer a lot more turn than it did the last time we played on it,” he added.

A turning wicket should suit Pakistan, who have one of the balanced spin attacks in this tournament. Shahid Afridi, the Pakistan captain, is the tournament’s highest wicket-taker with 16 wickets while Abdur Rehman and Mohammad Hafeez have also generally bowled pretty well.

Pakistan also have the option of including aggressive off-spinner Saeed Ajmal in their playing eleven. “We will certainly consider all options,” said Intikhab. “We have good spinners and a pretty decent pace attack.”

India vs Pakistan : Ranbir Kapoor’s dream Going to be true

India vs Pakistan : Ranbir Kapoor’s dream Going to be true ,Ranbir Kapoor is catching up on the action in the ongoing Cricket World Cup in the subcontinent.

In a recent interview, when asked what his dream final of this world cup would be, Ranbir said: “India versus Pakistan.” Doubtlessly, it would be a match that would have billions of cricket buffs on the edge of their seats.

When asked to give a few words of advice to the Indian cricket team, Ranbir was at a loss but quickly added: “I think they know well what to do. They don’t need my advice.”

Picking his dream team from Bollywood, Ranbir said he would choose Amitabh Bachchan to field at the boundary because he’s tall and can catch the shots headed for a six. He said he would choose Aamir Khan as the wicketkeeper because Aamir has good analysing skills. He added that he would choose Hrithik Roshan as the pace bowler since he (Hrithik) can run so fast that the batsmen would get confused.

Out-half confusion an Irish weakness

Who is Ireland's first choice out-half?

With five games to go until the start of the World Cup, we are still none the wiser after Jonathan Sexton was picked ahead of Ronan O'Gara for Saturday's showdown with England.

In such a pivotal position, it is not a situation that inspires confidence and is in stark contrast to the certainty of other World Cup contenders. New Zealand have Dan Carter, Australia look to Quade Cooper, England are starting Toby Flood with Jonny Wilkinson the designated cover and even the 'drop-meister' himself, France coach Marc Lievremont, has kept faith in Francois Trinh-Duc.

Ireland coach Declan Kidney has consistently referred to Ireland's good fortune at having two quality 10s to choose from but surely it is time to make that choice. Continuing to swap between Sexton and O'Gara irrespective of performance breeds and spreads uncertainty through a squad whose Six Nations campaign has been defined by that quality.

Look at it from O'Gara's point of view. He comes off the bench to save the day against Italy, nearly does the same against France having been produced when the Irish were floundering, earns a starting spot against Scotland and then Wales and, despite performing strongly in both games, is hauled off early at which point Ireland go into free-fall. Then he is dropped.

At 34 years of age and after 107 Ireland caps, O'Gara is entitled to feel a little bemused.

There are a couple of theories behind Sexton's inclusion. One is that, with nothing tangible to play for, Ireland can go for broke against the English and Sexton is the man for throwing caution to the wind. However, as was discussed here yesterday, O'Gara's record of masterminding attacking rugby is well established.

Another theory is that Sexton is starting to restore his confidence after a campaign where he has lacked his Leinster assurance, most obviously demonstrated by the skewed kick to touch which set up Wales' 'try' last weekend and then fluffing a penalty he would ordinarily slot without hesitation.

A third hypothesis is that Sexton's inclusion is on a rotational basis but, while the intensity of the Six Nations has natural uses as a World Cup testing ground, Ireland need a victory to instill self-belief after a campaign which captain Brian O'Driscoll yesterday described as "topsy-turvy" and all the evidence suggests that prerogative would be best served with O'Gara at 10.

'Peace anthem' For Band gives city

Cricket lovers in UT will have a new anthem. A five-member band of students from the city has written and composed a rap-pop fusion song that talks of peace among nations through the popular game. The band, Driving on Track, won the Chandigarh auditions of the Cricket for Peace programme being conducted in India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, which are hosting the World Cup.

The band has also included a hint of Punjabi in it and the lyrics go, ''Zyada he hae zor taan akhade che dikhalo, World War chade ke cricket war kara lo...''

More than 100 bands from the three countries participated in the auditions held in nine cities for this multi-lingual citizen programme. A band each was chosen from the cities to feature in an album that will be launched in Mumbai on the eve of the ICC World Cup finals. On Wednesday, band members ' Aroun, Shashank, Sumit, Karan and Kunal ' recorded their song for the album which will be launched by eminent personalities from the music and cricketing world.

Talking to TOI, Shashank, a second year engineering student, who is the bass guitarist in the band, said, ''The minute we got to know about the contest, we were sure to come up with a different song. We decided to make a fusion song that has Western as well local elements in it. So we included Punjabi rap to give it a desi touch.''

But the most challenging part for them was the time crunch. They had only two days to compose the song and its music. Taking it up as a dare, they managed to beat the deadline and defeat five other competing bands in the city. BA-II student Aroun, who initiated the band, said their song is called 'No hate no boundaries'. ''We have tried to make a catchy song that is easy to rhyme and is for the masses,'' said Aroun, who is a promising keyboard player and is also the lead guitarist and vocalist in the band. The band's drummer, Sumit, a student of Class XII, said it was tough to compose a song within two days and that too without a place to practice.

The band's drummer, Sumit, said, ''I couldn't practice drums and create music, but I gave it my best and got selected.' The youngest among them, Karan, is studying in Class IX and is into hardcore metal and is the band's Punjabi vocalist. ''To give our song an Indian and classical touch, we also included the tabla,'' explained Kunal, a second year commerce student. Now a keyboardist for the band, Kunal had earlier mastered in playing the tabla.

The boys said that the highlight of the World Cup finale will be the performance of a Tri-Nation Band constituted by nine lead singers from India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, selected through this contest. They will create the Cricket for Peace anthem that will be multi-lingual, using Hindi, Bangla, Sinhalese and English.
