Delhi Daredevils roll out green carpet, finally

For a side that bought seven seamers in the IPL auction Delhi Daredevils had made the surprising choice of playing them on surfaces at the Ferozeshah Kotla bereft of any advantage. That is set to change. Their next IPL home match at the Ferozeshah Kotla, against Kings XI Punjab, will be played on a juicy green top.

While Delhi Daredevils had always wanted to play their home games on greener tracks that suited their side's composition, logistical constraints like television angles had forced them to revert to the three placid tracks in the centre that were prepared for the World Cup.

However, after consecutive losses at home it was captain Virender Sehwag's adamant demand for "a green wicket which was hard and bouncy," that finally did the trick. The team has decided to mount the television camera's on a temporary structure. The franchise will have to incur a loss as the stand will cut into some of the premium priced stands.

According to team management sources, the growing legend of Paul Valthaty was apparently also responsible for the shift. Largely unknown before the IPL, Valthaty has made a name for himself with his blistering batting while opening for Kings XI. According to team management sources, it was determined that Valthaty has a weakness against quality pace bowling, and his batting will count for nothing on the green track that awaits him in Delhi.

"We have prepared a green wicket unique to T20 cricket. Never before will a T20 be played on such a track with so much grass on it," said Ferozeshah Kotla curator Venkat Sundaram.
